Personalisation and Augmented Reality make for a more social snog

Snog wanted to give customers more reasons to visit their store. We created a photo booth experience that used augmented reality technologies to add cheeky brand messages to customer selfies.

During numerous store visits and conversations with the target audience, one aspect of the brand kept coping up, the slogans. “Do you fancy a Snog?" “I like snogging better than ice cream" etc. Teenagers using these these cheeky phrases prompted a thought. What if everyone who used the Photo Booth got their own Snog catchphrase.

In order to deliver on this we needed two things, a way to generate the phrases and a way to integrate the phrase into the image. While we could have simply displayed the text on the bottom of the photo, we felt this didn't really make the slogan feel like it belonged to the user. Being able to put the phrase in the users hands felt more appropriate, so we turned to augmented reality. We put cards bearing an optical marker in the booth so that when users held it up, the camera recognised it and displayed the slogan. This meant that users could pose with their slogan in many different ways.

That left us with the task of generating slogans for each user. Rather than be completely random we felt it was important for each one to have a link with the user so we built a series of simple questions into the experience. This enabled us to generate slogans based on each users answers. Users chose to share the results across Facebook. An entertaining and engaging photobooth with a difference.
