GUM is an iPhone app that lets you attach digital messages to real-world products, thereby turning physical things into social pinboards.

You simply scan a barcode on any item and then leave a note on that item or read other people's notes.

You can read an interview with the Product Manager of GUM, icoEx Director David Rogerson, on Startup Stories.

A fresh approach to design

The look and feel of the app balances retro and modern aesthetics. Even the name GUM is inspired by the first barcode to go on a retail product; a pack of Juicy Fruit gum circa 1974.

How it's being used

We have had teachers in Texas using it to teach English, Libraries in the states using it to comment on books, we used it to give a presentation using a bag of shopping and comic fans are using it to comment on their favourite editions. GUM is currently building partnerships with brands and retailers to augment our relationships with products.
